How Do You “Give” Away “Thanks”? A Thanksgiving Message

2 Steps to GIVE More THANKS This Year

Thanksgiving is upon us—a cherished time when many of us gather with loved ones, savor great food, and pause to express gratitude. It’s one of my favorite holidays because it centers on appreciation and connection, without the pressure of extravagant expectations.

This morning, like many of you, I reflected on the classic question: “What am I grateful for?” But as my mind wandered, it landed on something deeper: “How do you ‘GIVE’ away more ‘THANKS’?”

To GIVE means to freely transfer something to someone else. But here’s the catch: you can’t give what you don’t have. If I want to give more thanks, I first need to cultivate more gratitude. Here’s the beauty of gratitude—it’s not like any other possession. When you give it away, it doesn’t diminish; in fact, sharing thanks often multiplies the gratitude you feel.

So, how can we give away more thanks this season—and beyond? Here are two steps to help:

1. Increase Your Gratitude

Before you can give thanks, you need to nurture gratitude within yourself.

a. Be Mindful and Present
We often spend too much time dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. When we do, we miss the beauty of the present. Slow down. Breathe. Take a moment to notice the blessings in your life right now.

b. Journal Your Gratitude
Research shows that writing down three things you’re grateful for each day significantly boosts your sense of gratitude. Make it a challenge—see how long you can go without repeating an item. Over time, you’ll find yourself naturally noticing more to be thankful for.

c. Choose Positivity
Gratitude and positivity go hand in hand. Life’s challenges are inevitable, but your perspective is a choice. Choose to focus on joy, growth, and silver linings. By doing so, your gratitude will grow exponentially.

2. Give Thanks Freely

Once your gratitude is overflowing, share it with the world in meaningful ways.

a. Be Genuine
Authenticity is the foundation of strong relationships. Express your thanks in a way that reflects your true self—whether it’s through words, actions, or small gestures.

b. Be Specific
The more specific your gratitude, the more impactful it will be. Pay attention to others and find unique ways to show your thanks—whether it’s a thoughtful note, a small gift, or an act of service.

c. Be Timely
Follow your intuition when someone crosses your mind. Act on those quiet nudges and reach out to express your thanks before the moment passes. A timely word of appreciation can have a profound effect.

This season, I’m reminded of just how much I have to be grateful for—including you. Thank you for being part of my life and for making a difference in your own circle of influence. I’m also deeply thankful to a loving God, whose hand I see guiding me daily.

Happy Thanksgiving, my friends. Let’s GIVE thanks generously this year.

With gratitude,
Marcus Green
